Against the unemployment in Spain: logical employment distribution

I summarize you the global reality: there are more and more population in the world and less capacity to generate new employment. Factors as the continuous incorporation of the digital technology in the industrial and business structure and the aging of the population, have contributed to increase this situation in many developed countries. This problem of global sustainability of employment is starting to be a serious concern for organizations like the International labour Organization, who has placed it in the centre of its main analysis.

The need of considering this that specially exists in Spain, involves two levels of independent analysis:

a)     The survival of work schedules which are not very conciliator with our personal life.

b)     An excessive unemployment rate.

The Spanish Crisis has generated a huge massive drama for many families that has been exposed to very difficult and hard situations with the social cost that generated the complicate situation that for example, affects the children.

Nevertheless, we are in a situation that although we have not reach the bottom yet, we should make some important changes in our social and labour relationships model. Sometime ago I wrote a post about the importance that has reach the implementation of the part time contract in some countries around us in order to avoid the crisis impacts. Nevertheless, in our country the need of promoting this debate seems not to have left a mark, as much as it is needed in

The part time contract should become established in our working framework due to the following reasons I list:

  1. Allow to drive forward, with warranties, a truly conciliation of the working life with the personal life.
  2. Allow to expand/extend the hours of opening and on this way trying to be competitive with the big malls.
  3. Both the performance and the quality of the work is improved.
  4. Allows to create new job positions. On condition that there is an ambitious plan of tax incentives.

informe_conciliacion_laboral_espana

Nevertheless, there are some reasons why this working contract model may have its disadvantages:

  • Impossibility of having a professional development similar to what a full time job offers.
  • Incompatible with the great needs of money income in our pension system. If we work less hours, we would also pay the national insurance for less ours, therefore it limits the possibility of obtaining a satisfactory pension once our time for retirement arrives.
  • The need that the life cost gets cheaper. The logic trend, at least in Spain, which is that things as housing, food and services as light or water, gets cheaper or at least maintain their price in the following years, once the deficit is controlled and the tax need (growth of VAT) becomes not so urgent.

Finally, being realistic, it should be noted that just a very few people think about the full evelopment of their professional carrier by having a part time job. Therefore, having in mind the seasonal or temporary factor of this job need, taking care of young children, combine it with studying development of personal projects, entrepreneurship, we can find common points with the administrations in order to promote this kind of contract, although it might be a situational factor without an strong reduction in our return as payers.

Finally here you have a very interesting article about this topic, work for all but work lees:

If anyone has further information about the working flexibility and the promotion of the employment, I would be very happy to receive it.

The “Art of War” for unemployed people

“The Art of War” is a Chinese treaty of war strategy which its age remains unknown, but it is thought to be from the IV century b.c and it was written by a Chinese master called Sun Tzu. It has been used as reference since the XVIII century for important strategists as Napoleón and for innumerable courses and leadership and strategy publications nowadays.

This treaty is based on analyzing the enemy and all circumstances that surround it/him/her. However, when we are unemployed, the enemy is often ourselves.  I mean, it is us who decide whether to win or lose the battle against the unemployment depending on our attitude in facing the situation.

The most important conclusion that we can get from this treaty is that to beat the enemy we need to know him/her deeply and also we need to establish an effective and well-proportioned strategy. Another remarkable conclusion is the need of dividing the enemy and use a surprising factor in order to distract him/her.

regata_1165x55cm

How can we get to know ourselves (as a potential enemy) and divide ourselves to beat him/her?

The change from a professional activity to the unemployment is undoubtedly a traumatic situation and generates some instability  for  our self-esteem that we can correct with our capacity to face the difficulties that may arise immediately.

Firstly, we should do a deep, rational and true evaluation of our weak points. After that we should know how to manage our strengths in an effective way. In the end and the most important thing is to know how to divide our abilities as a candidate as a good general would do (General of an army).

Due to this reason I invite all you to analyze our strengths and find out if your troops are supplied and ready for the new battle-Which are your troops? I propose the following units:

  1. Motivation-Do I know what I want to do? Do I know how to get it and where to go?
  2. Abilities (instruction)-What are my technical abilities? Do I need more training or instruction? Am I ready for new labor market?
  3. Team (Artillery)- Do I have the correct weapons? Languages, Computer knowledge, extra training.
  4. Capacity of evaluation and assessment. (Strategy)-When we start looking for a job we have to bare in mind what might have changed in the labor market. It is important to know the new tendencies in your professional area and to know what is demanded now and what you can contribute with. It should be pointed out a sentence of the book with says: “if you do not know how to be strong or weak you will be defeated”. This takes us to the next principle. There are some people in Linked In that calls/names theirselves CEO of companies that has never invoiced a euro yet.
  5. Adaptability (market research): it is very important both to get new knowledge and to know how to behave in a new working culture, get to know how to adapt ourselves to new people and ways of working. Our mind has to be more flexible in order to interact with the new working environment and life in general.
  6. Strategy for victory (lead correctly). The most important thing. The reach for a job position implies a daily applied method, and also a strategy which is generated by the interaction of the five previously mentioned units.

It is really essential to know the quantity of our strengths or competency. On the III chapter “About the proposals of defeat and victory”, the author recommends the following maxim which I find very important:

If you know the others and you know yourself, not in even one hundred battles you would be in danger; if you don’t know the others, but you know yourself, you might loss one battle, but you possibly win another: if you neither know the others nor yourself, you will be in danger in each battle.

I think it is one of the main principle of the book. When I say that the unemployed person is her/his own enemy, very often, it is due to the effect of self-devaluation as professionals and in some cases as individual human. Which generates no movement, apathy and in many cases depression. That is why the important thing is to know where we are and how to start building a new path with better foundations.

Another basic principle that the author outlines which I find very useful is the following:

Therefore, the general rule of military operations consists on not thinking that the enemy would come, but trust on having the right tools to face him/her; not thinking that the adversary will attack, but to trust to have something which can not be attacked.

My understanding about the foresaid is that we should avoid post-pining for example, learning languages, getting training certificates that might help us or learn certain computer tools/programs. We will find sooner or later the job position we are interested on and which nearly fully fits on what we are looking for and it gets away from our hands due not have learnt about that certain area.

“The Art of War” is overall a preventive manual. It is a reflection about the fact that the best victory is the one obtained without a battle. So we should try to win with the minimum use of resources and also in our field. An interview should be a step that we attend with the best information, the best predisposition and not been afraid of the possible surprises that may arise. If in the job description it is indicated the need to speak in English, you have to be ready for an interview in English or for different tests.

There are many conclusions that can be obtained from this reading which I highly recommend you. Although the most important for what we are interested in this section, is the call for action, the surprise factor, adaptability and the division of our strengths, overall never show your weaknesses to someone that could employ you.

Let’s face the year with energy, strategy and enthusiasm for our projects. I don’t know other way to reach them.

10 Networking basics for unemployed people

We all listen to talk about the Anglicism Networking and if we are asked about it, we would not know how to define it with accuracy, as its meaning may change depending on the context.

regata.1165x55cm

A basic approach to the concept of Networking could be the following: Group of constructive interactions with other people with the objective of developing  and promoting our professional activity.

On the context of unemployment it is more important to do an effective and active Networking process. Many of you may think that the contest to perform this activity is when you are active-and it is true-but unemployment it is a context in which we can implement a process of Networking which is closest and more related with the activity that really fits our real personal motivations.

Therefore, here I dare to suggest some basics of Networking for unemployed people:

1)  Think about it and analyze your vocation. Be sincere with yourself, both with your abilities and interests.

2)  Select your references. References are both people and companies. We all have our/the ideal company that we want to work in.

3) Self-determining. Write in a few lines what you can offer to your possible new company and analyze the strengths of your resume.

4) Establish a strategy. It is important before starting the Networking action to establish a communication strategy: what, how and when. This implies writing a very personalized letters of motivation where the motivational factor is very important and explanation of your skills. Select to contact the appropriate people. In fact may be it is not appropriate to write a person in a very high position in the company. It is important to start it with someone in the recruiting department, not forgetting to follow the recruiting guidelines of the company as it is explained on their website.

5)  Be clear about the speech for the company. It is essential to organize a speech in order to be able to explain without any doubt your motivations to hold a job position. Ask yourself the following questions:

  • Why am I interested on this company/business?
  • What can I offer them?
  • Is my profile suitable to work with them?
  • What aspects from my previous job are useful for the company?

6) Firstly contact someone neutral from the company. It can be a friend, someone you know, a Linked In contact. You can establish that contact throw a short face-to-face meeting in place nearby the office and make some consistent and important questions about the organization and the company. The success in these meetings in Spain is usually limited.

7) Be persistent but not insistent. Contacting the company does not mean that they are going to answer automatically. You have to be different and create attraction for your profile, taking care of your curriculum, photo, motivation letter, references, etc. Always register yourself on the website.

8) Offer yourself for knowing the company/organization closest freely. It consists on collaborating for free for a week and if they accept they will be able to know your interests, team working capacity, your knowledge on the area. It is a way of confirming your preconceived idea of the company or also, may be to discard it.

 9)   Have a wide knowledge of your possible new activity. Try to know all the companies in the sector. Get to know data of their international activity, their financial situation, news. This means spending long afternoons on the Internet analyzing the webs of the companies.

10) Give image of active attitude. If you are unemployed and you have possibilities to have an interview with the company you wish to work in or with someone related to the new activity that you want to carry out, it is both important to communicate enthusiasm and also be able to create an image of activity during your unemployment time. Explain all activities you are involved in: training, volunteer, other activities.

All you know, we are in a context that allows us to contact other people easily. The important fact is to generate interest in other people and you only get that by an original and consistent proposal of your possible collaboration with the organization, company, etc.
